Rage Progress Towards Being Playable on AMD/ATI
Oct 8, 2011PC GamingComments (0)
UPDATE: Installing AMD 11.10 Preview 3 drivers improved performance a bit more. The game is now finally running very good, with only minimal texture pop-in.

UPDATE: If you are still having trouble getting Rage to run, I suggest downloading several different versions of your graphics driver and try each one. Create the cache folder as mentioned below. Go into services.msc (in run or search) and disable any unnecessary services related to your GPU (I disabled AMD External Events Utility and AMD FUEL Service). Defrag your hard drive and make sure nothing unnecessary is running in the background (torrent, virus scan, etc). In the Rage menu in-game, disable AA and put texture cache to large (if you have a 1GB video card or greater; if not, you may want to think about upgrading).

UPDATE: I managed to get the game running decently using AMD 11.6 drivers and disabling the two AMD services. There is still a lot that doesn't feel good about the game. Mouse acceleration, textures, etc.

I made some progress on getting Rage to run. It is still currently unplayable, but I reduced the stuttering/freezing from nearly constant to just every couple seconds. Between freezes I now get very noticeable texture pop-in, which is the main problem other PC players are experiencing.

System specs:
AMD Phenom II X2 @ 3.7 ghz
HD 6850
4GB DDR3 (2x2GB)
Windows 7 64-bit

While I haven't been able to get my game playable, these tweaks and changes I've made may help other PC players to get their version running. I've scoured the net to find all of the tweaks that people are claiming to work.

Create Cache Folder

Create the following folder if it doesn't exist:

Windows 7:
DRIVE:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\id software\rage
Windows XP:
DRIVE:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\id software\rage
On my Windows 7 system this is what it looks like:

C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\id software\rage
That folder likely wasn't created on install. Once you create it and run Rage, it will be used for cache files.

Launch Options and Config

See this Steam post for a run-down on settings you can set in your launch options and a custom config file.

AMD Graphics Drivers

I've tried the 11.9, Rage Performance (first & current), 11.10 Preview, and 11.10 Preview 2 drivers. So far they haven't made much of a difference, except the first Rage Performance drivers that brought the game to a halt. You may want to try it with a few different drivers, but you'll probably get the best performance with the latest, which are the 11.10 Preview 2 drivers.
