Chrome has been making some major inroads into the browser market share of both Internet Explorer and Firefox. It is now close to tied with Firefox and the trend seems to favor Chrome. This is no doubt due to Google leveraging its marketing power to push Chrome. The new Chromebooks will certainly help push the name recognition further.

I use both browsers regularly (8+ hours a day, side-by-side on dual monitors) and after a couple years I still find myself using Firefox first. I figured I would try and compile a mostly-objective list of the reasons why I prefer Firefox. This comparison is done for Chrome version 16 and Firefox version 9.

Update: Firefox now includes the "http://" when you copy-paste from the address bar.

As my eyes gazed upon my address bar this morning, I found something to be oddly missing. I didn't notice it at first, but after copy-pasting a link into an email and wondering why the http:// was absent, I saw it. How DARE you Firefox! How DARE you remove my http://! Stop trying to be like Chrome!

Ok, it's not that big of a deal. You can easily change it back. Just go to:

about:config

Type trim into the filter until you can see this line:

browser.urlbar.trimURLs

Change it to false by double-clicking it. No browser restart required.

In case you aren't acquainted with these new features, here is a brief rundown on them. Skip to the bottom to just read how to disable them.

With Instant Search, Google starts searching as soon as you start typing into Google's search box. Think of it like auto-complete taken to the next level. This increases bandwidth usage and can be very annoying for fast typists searching for specific queries, since Google will make additional, irrelevant searches while you're typing. Combined with the search query input box taking focus when entering a new search page, any stray keyboard hits will immediately change your search results.

With Instant Preview, Google shows you thumbnails of web sites right in the search results, so you can see it without having to visit it. It used to be you had to click the Magnifying Glass next to a result to show it, but Google has recently changed it so that any click anywhere in the search body will bring up the preview. This is doubly annoying when you're only clicking to bring focus back to that browser window or to deselect some highlighted text (experienced computer users tend to make lots of "extra" clicks as well).

Update: Adobe has changed their plugin installer so this post no longer applies. Please ignore!

Why is it that when you want to install the Flash Player plugin for Firefox from Adobe, they want you to install their "Adobe DLM" (download manager) first? Installing this DLM then requires a Firefox restart before it can download the Flash Player plugin. And if you want to remove it after that, you have to do it manually, which requires another Firefox restart.
