Concerned about the lack of Crysis 2 PC Focus
So far this year Crytek has released two trailers/teasers for Crysis 2. The first was a Tech Demo and the second, released just 2 days ago, is an apocalypse-themed cinematic that takes place in New York. Both of these showcase early in-game footage, mostly on console. Prior to these, we saw a tech demo for Cryengine 3. Like the more recent footage, that too showcased mostly consoles. There was also two nanosuit trailers (whoopee) last year, but those hardly bear mentioning.
Crytek certainly has their work cut out for them making Crysis run on the consoles and still look halfway decent, but I am concerned that they are focusing so much on consoles that the PC version won't pack anything really new or exciting compared to the original Crysis. Is Crysis 2 just going to be another Warhead (mostly the same engine with a few minor improvements)? While Crysis 2 will still assuredly look top-notch on PC, it may not be the huge leap forward that Crysis was over Far Cry. To quote Dan Adams in his IGN Crysis review: "The impressive visuals [of Crysis] are so far beyond Far Cry's that it's hard to even comprehend what Crytek, given another few years of development time, will be able to come up with." Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Crysis 2 will be as hard to comprehend as originally hoped. The original Crysis came out towards the end of 2007, nearly 3 years ago, and so far the footage Crytek has shown or Crysis 2 looks no better than what the original game was capable of.
Leaving this on a lighter note, if Crytek is able to obtain the same level of visual quality as Crysis but get it to run smoother and on lower spec machines, then that would certainly be a big step forward, although not the one I was hoping for (without Crysis, what reason is there to upgrade your GPU anyway? I'm still rocking an 8800GT).
